How to Send SMS Using Email to Major US Cellphone Carriers

by Ramesh Natarajan on August 20, 2010

Are you always sending SMS to your friend’s cellphone from your cellphone? Did you know that you can SMS to someone using email?

This list is extremely helpful, if you are outside US and would like to SMS someone in US, you can just send it as an email.

This also helps sysadmins, who want to receive the system alert notification from a monitoring software to the pager as a SMS message. For example, I use Verizon phone, and instead of sending my critical Nagios notifications to ramesh@thegeekstuff.com email address, I setup Nagios to send SMS to my cell phone using @vtext.com email address.

Replace cell-phone-number in all the email address below with your 10 digit mobile phone number. For example, if you friend’s cellphone number is 123-456-7890 with AT & T, send an email to 1234567890@txt.att.net, which will be delivered as SMS message to your friend on his phone.

If you don’t see a specific cell phone carrier in the list below, leave a comment and let me know.

Even with the proper email address, some carriers will not accept anything from protected sources (reverse DNS lookup kills it). I wanted my server to text my cell phone when certain events happen. The carrier finally told me they could not accept such messages from our corporate environment. Of course other carriers used by my colleagues could receive the text. Now, I have the server send messages to an email address outside my office and then I have that message sent to my cell phone. It does work with the addresses you posted, but sometimes you have to go to an interim step to get it done.

Is it possible with Net10 carrier? It’s a non contract pre pay service.

How do I find out, who is the carrier for my friend’s cell phone ?

Hi,
You are not listing some prepaid companies, like:
1. Net10
2, StraightTalk
They may be covered by one of the major carriers, the question is if they will get the SMS?

Thanks for the useful information.

The best way to find out if your carrier does txt to email/email to txt is to ask them. Most major carriers that service larger metropolitan markets should have something in place but it is best to check with them first.

Awesome article. I tried sending to my mobile phone (I’m a Verizon customer). At first I thought it didn’t work (the process) but it did –it just takes a few minutes.

Thanks for posting this article.

Cheers,
Adam

i want to send a text from my email to NET10 ….

25 Bob February 4, 2012 at 5:41 pm

I had used a universal extension that would allow me to send an email to any carrier’s SMS instead of having to specify, for example, 999-999-9999@txt.att.net.

I believe it had the word “switch” in the extension. Something like @*switch.net where * is the word I’m trying to recall.

Have you heard of this?

26 Bayleigh February 4, 2012 at 9:44 pm

No I haven’t heard of that… so i just put in the person’s number then @switch.net ??

27 Geo Rude April 1, 2012 at 6:25 pm
